Washing An Electric Blanket?

I have an electric blanket and I’ve been wanting to wash it. I want to know if there is a special way to wash it. It’s not hooked up or anything, I just use it like a regular blanket. I’m just concerned about the heating coils. Do I treat it like a normal blanket or does it still need special care?

It can be washed on the gentle cycle but I never put mine in the dryer because of the coils. I always hang mine on the backs of chairs to dry.
If your never going to hook it up, you can wash it like a regular blanket, even toss it in the dryer. But if you plan in hooking it up this winter, then follow the manufactures directs. You can usually find the washing instruction on there website if you have lost the instructions.
Warm water and detergent, but don’t put in dryer. Line dry it.
You could wash it but if I had an electric blanket and did not want to get the shock of my life.. I would have it dry cleaned in a heart beat.
Here is a general washing method that might work for you. (However, unless the manufacturer suggests it, never put an electric blanket in a clothes dryer or clean the blanket in a dry-cleaning machine at a self-service laundry.)
To wash, first disconnect and remove any controls from the blanket, then shake it out well.
Now set your washing machine on a gentle cycle with a warm water temperature. When the tub is full, add a mild detergent (no bleach) and let it agitate for a few minutes, then add the blanket and begin timing the wash cycle.
Leave the blanket in for five minutes. Next, turn the setting to a spin cycle to drain the tub, and then to a cold-water rinse-and-spin cycle.
After this is completed, promptly remove the blanket from the washing machine and gently press out excess moisture – do NOT wring an electric blanket.
Dry the blanket by hanging it over several outside clotheslines or the like to air dry.
READ the instructions that came with it or that are on the little tag. If you don’t have the owners manual, then see if you can find a manufacturers name on the tag and look for a website. If all of that fails then I suggest talking to a couple of top notch dry cleaners and see what they suggest.
Washing an electrical appliance, (and that is what you are talking about,) on the surface, sounds like a moronic idea. You don’t want to find out later that you did it all wrong, just as the electricity begins to fry your body.
Laundering
Laundering an electric blanket is as easy as
laundering a regular blanket. Follow the specific
manufacturer’s care instructions for best results.
Machine wash for a limited period of time; generally
one to five minutes is suggested. Dissolve detergent in
the suggested water temperature before placing the
blanket in the washer; do not use bleach. Evenly
distribute the blanket in the washing machine. Use a
regular cold water rinse and spin cycle. If a
conventional washing machine is used, do not use wringer
to extract the water.
OR
Hand wash by soaking the blanket for 15 minutes in
detergent and lukewarm water. Squeeze the suds through
the blanket. Rinse in cold water at least twice. Do not
vigorously twist or wring the blanket.
Machine dry by preheating the dryer at medium
temperature. Add the blanket and allow it to tumble dry
for ten minutes. Most manufacturers suggest the damp
blanket finish drying by draping the blanket over two
parallel lines. Use both hand to straighten and pull into
shape.
